Central University for Nationalities
Central University for Nationalities (CUN), located in the western
surburbs of Bejing, is a national key university for training of
highlevel professionals. CUN was founded on the basis of the Yan'an institute
for Nationalities, which was set up in Sept.1941 in Yan'an. On june 11,1951,
CUN officially opened. The former Social Studies Departments in YanJing
University and Tsinhua University and Minority Languages Section, Oriental
Languages and Literatures Department in Peking University merged into the CUN.
On November 30, 1993, the name Central institute for Nationalities changed
into Central University for Nationalities.
During its forty years of development, CUN has become a comprehensive
university with the humanities as its focus and with ethnology as its
unique characteristic. The natural sciences, the management sciences, and
the arts are also offered. At the present time, the university has the
following departments:

- Minority Languages and Literature

- Philosophy
- Chinese Language and Literature

- Physics
- Biology and Chemistry
- Computer Science and Applied Mathematics
- Fine Arts

Over 2700 people comprise the teaching and administrative staff
and workers on the campus. Presently 116 professors, 469 associate
professors are at their posts. Among them are a number of scholars with
high academic acomplishments,well-known both at home and abroad, and
also a large number of talented middle aged and young teachers; 97 of
them have been awarded honors by the Government for being "Experts with
Outstanding Contributions. " One third of the teaching and
administrative staff are form ethnic minority groups.
CUN is not only a training center for nationalities but also a
science research center. In order to promote the cultural and economics
development in minority nationality areas. CUN has set up:

The university has good conditions and facilities.
For study and research, the library of the university has more
than one million books, over 120, 000 of them in more than twenty
minority languages, including Mongolian,Tibetan,Uygur,Kazak,Korean,Zhuang,
Bouyei,Yi,Manchu,Jingpo,Kirgis,Xibe,Naxi, and Dai. There are also more
than 50,000 books in foreign languages. The State EDucation Commission
has set up a Centre of Document information on Liberal Arst.
A bimonthly journal of the Central University for Nationalities
and a quarterly Research on Education of National Minorities issued by
the university are distributed throughout the country and abroad.The
university has a modern Computer Linguistic Analysis Laboratory, a
Computer Centre and an Audion-Visual Center. The publishing house of the
University has published over 300 different kinds of books every year
and has obtained both good social and economic affects.
Now the campus occupies an
area of 38.7 hectares and the buildings cover 197, 000 square meters.
Among them are new teaching building covering 25,000 square metres, a
modern gymnasium and a nationalities musemu with 20000 piece of rare antique .
There are many houses in Chinese styles building in 50's, some of them
are "protected buildings" named by Beijing environment protection bureau.
The compus is beautiful,with areas of grass,tress and flowering shrubs,
and is a nice place to study.
The university actively carries out the policies of reform and
opening to the outside world as well as international academic exchange
programs. Up to this point, we have established cooperative relations
with 30 countries and areas by paying mutual visits and developing
joint projects. The University also has sined academic cooperative
agreements with the following universities: University in Canada, Alaska
Pacific University, and Washington University seattle in the U. S. ,
Momoyama College and Okinawa University in Japan, as well as Chulalongon
University, Chiangma University and Rajabhat Institute Pibulsongkram
phitsanulok in Thailand.
