Tour in Guangxi
- Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is worth visiting because of its
national minorities, its karst caves, and medicinal herb garden. Guangxi
was founded as an autonomous region in 1958. There are other minorities,
including Miao, Yao and Dong.
Capital city, Nanning (Southern Peace), was founded in 214 B.C. The Guangxi
Museum displays botanical and zoological specimens, historical relics, and
Taiping history. It also boasts the largest collection of bronze drums
(over 300) in China. South Lake Park has 1200 varieties of medicinal herbs,
plus orchids and bonsai. The Yiling Cave, is much like a Guilin cave, with
colored lights to highlight weird rock formations that look like lions,
hens, and vegetables. A visit to a minority village or to the Institute of
Nationalities will help visitors see art, music, dances of various
nationalities. The minorities have their own colorful festivals. They sing
songs, hold dragon boat races, dances or light firecrackers on these
occasions. It will be fascinating to watch or to participate in these
intriguing activities. Jintian Village is where the Taiping Heavenly Kingom
originated. It was the most extensive peasant uprising in Chinese history.
Liuzhou, a city immediately west of Guangdong province, was founded in
111 B.C. It is blessed by colorful minorities, karst caves and hills. The
Liu Marquis Temple and Tomb was built in honor of Liu Zongyuan, a famous
Tang writer and for four years provincial governor. In the Bai Lain Cave,
Liujiang Man lived 20,000-30,000 years ago.
Guilin (City of Cassia Trees), is in northern Guangxi. Its scenery
inspired centuries of landscape painters. This area is famous for its
vertical limestone mountains rising above tree-lined streets, rice fields
and the meandering Li and Taohua (Peach Blossom) rivers. It is also known
for its caves. The city itself is a favorite of honeymooners, small, full
of parks and ideal for walking. Along the clear, tranquil Li river are
tiny, beautifully-shaped, and tame hills covered with green trees. Take
a boat trip, and you will find yourself placed in a watercolor painting.
The Seven Star Park has seven peaks positioned like the stars in the Big
Dipper. Seven Star Cave is 1 km long, 43 meters at its widest. Colored
lights highlight the grotesque limestone formations.
Beihai, Guangxi's sea port, has a Silver Beach, with fine sand, where
visitors can swim or walk at sunset.
